Thingvellir / Gullfoss / Geysir /
We drive out of Reykjavik to Thingvellir National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage
Thingvellir National Park, home of Iceland´s parliament from 930-1798 , Thingvellir is also the point on the Earth´s surface where the North Atlantic ridge splits the two geological continents of North America and Eurasia.
From Thingvellir, we continue over to the world famous Geysir geothermal hot springs for a walk among boiling hot springs. Just near by is the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall where you feel the enjoy the thundering roar of the water falling down into a canyon.
Secret Lagoon Geothermal Pool
Secret Lagoon natural hot springs are located in the small village called Fludir and are in the Golden Circle area.
We have kept it natural and unique for our guests so they can get the true Icelandic feeling. The pool’s natural surroundings and steam rising into the air gives the place a magical feeling. The warm water stays at 38-40 Celsius all year. In the whole area there are several geothermal spots and a little “Geysir” which erupts every 5 minutes, showing off for the guests relaxing in the hot spring.
During winter, the northern lights often give a great light show above Secret Lagoon.
We continue to the South Coast where we will spend the night.
Overnight at hotel Rangá or similar
Hotel Rangá is the ideal place to stay for watching the northern lights, if there are any in the sky. The Northern lights are weather conditioned and never guaranteed
Day 2 – South Coast & Ice Cave in Vatnajökull area
Today we take the direction to the Jökulsárlon area and the Ice Cave.
The ice caves in the Icelandic glaciers are a truly mesmerising wonder of nature. The cave’s blue glassy ice roof and snow carry us into a fantasy realm that has only been visited before in dreams.
We will stay inside the ice cave for at least 45 minutes. You’ll be thankful you’ve brought very warm winter clothing.
New caves are searched for and discovered each autumn, to be visited in the winter. They are normally found in various different locations on the south side of glacier Vatnajokull and its outlets.
Sometimes the caves are very special, sometimes not as special, but become very special in the right light and conditions. Some caves we find are very stable and we can go in there in any weather, but others are less safe and we might not even go there at all, even if they are very beautiful.
Some of the caves are only accessible in temperatures below zero, such as when there is water on the ground that needs to be frozen all over in order for us to walk into the cave.
This is an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life as you journey into Europe’s largest glacier.
Jökulsáron glacier lagoon
The icebergs that calve from the glacier edge move towards the river mouth and get entrenched at the bottom. While floating, only about one tenth mass of an iceberg is seen above the water surface. The movement of the icebergs fluctuates with the tide currents. However, they start floating as icebergs when their size is small enough to drift to the sea.
These icebergs are seen in two shades, one type in milky white, while the other type is in bright blue colour, which is interplay of light and ice crystals.
We stay for the night in the glacier lagoon area, the northern lights might be
dancing in the sky that night, not to miss .
Accommodation : Hotel Glacier Lagoon 4* or similar in Jökulsárlon/ Skaftafell area
Day 3 – South Coast Highlights
We leave the glacier area and turn back on the South coast. On our way we will have Skaftafell National Park , where it is possible to take a short hike if the weather conditions allows it.
We continue to the Vík area . On the sea side is the black sandy coast destination, Dyrholey promontory with its great panorama view and the famous Reynisfjara beach.
We will also visit Skógafoss waterfall, with its 62 m high thundering cascade and Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which is unique in that you can walk behind it and take a different view of the world.
A breath taking view to the seaside and basalt ocean pillars on the land side. You will discover why this is one of the most used Hollywood film location in Iceland.
