The icebergs that calve from the glacier edge move towards the river mouth and get entrenched at the bottom. While floating, only about one tenth mass of an iceberg is seen above the water surface.
The movement of the icebergs fluctuates with the tide currents. However, they start floating as icebergs when their size is small enough to drift to the sea. These icebergs are seen in two shades, one type in milky white, while the other type is in bright blue colour, which is interplay of light and ice crystals.
We stay for the night in the glacier lagoon area, the northern lights might be
dancing in the sky that night, not to miss .
Overnight Good country hotel in Skaftafell / Jökulsárlon area
Day 4. Ice cave in Vatnajökull glacier – Back on track on the South Coast
We visit the Ice cave in the morning.
The ice caves in the Icelandic glaciers are a truly incredible wonder of nature. The cave’s blue glassy ice roof and snow carry us into a fantasy realm.
We will stay inside the ice cave for at least 45 minutes.
New caves are searched for and discovered each autumn, to be visited in the winter. They are normally found in various different locations on the south side of glacier Vatnajokull and its outlets.
Sometimes the caves are very special, sometimes not as special, but become very special in the right light and conditions. Some caves we find are very stable and we can go in there in any weather, but others are less safe and we might not even go there at all, even if they are very beautiful.
Some of the caves are only accessible in temperatures below zero, such as when there is water on the ground that needs to be frozen all over in order for us to walk into the cave.
This is an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life as you journey into Europe’s largest glacier.
