Ice cave & Northern lights experience
- 14 hours
The Ultimate Glacier lagoon and Northern Lights Experience on Iceland’s stunning South Coast. Skógafoss waterfall, Rock stack at Vik coast, Glacier Lagoon & Crystal Ice-beach, a visit to a natural Ice cave, “the Crystal cave” Seljalandsfoss and Norther light´s search.
The tour starts with a 7:30 pick up at a bus stop near your hotel and you are in for a very long but breathtaking day. You will be sitting in a comfortable luxury mini-bus, enjoying all the best highlights that the south coast has to offer in one package. Our first stop is at the beautiful waterfall Skógafoss, Reynisdrangar the basalt trolls near Vík is next on our list.
There you can enjoy the hexagonal basalt columns, the black sand beach and thundering ocean waves. We drive on towards the glacier lagoon where you will see icebergs floating in the lagoon and visit the Crystal beach where icebergs sit on the black sand, gloving like crystals. Truly a unique experience and maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Next adventure begins when you enter a true Super-truck that will take you through rough terrain and rivers to the Ice cave, the local guide will provide you with safety gear and lights before you enter the cave itself. On the way, we will be on the lookout for the magical Northern lights. Our final scheduled stop is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you have an option of walking behind the cascade.
During the winter months, the waterfall is lit up and provides great photo opportunities, especially if the Northern lights appear.
You can expect the tour to take 14-16 hours so bringing snack for the ride is a good idea, the driver will also be making short stops during the tour at service stations. Make sure you’re dressed well, we recommend hiking boots and multi layers of clothing as the temperature can be very low in the ice cave and around the lagoon.
You can expect to be back in Reykjavik city shortly after midnight.
A long day trip in a luxury mini-bus, guide. A visit to the ice caves or glacier walking on Breiðarmerkurjökull. A northern light search on the way back to the city. Safety gear and head lights for the ice cave.
What do I need to bring?
Dress according to the weather. Please wear/bring warm, comfortable clothing and waterproof outer layer, sturdy hiking boots, gloves and wool/fleece hat. Lunch and snacks can be bought during tour but are not included.
As your safety is our number one concern we will make every effort to find the best suited and safest ice caves at each time but as the conditions around and in the glacier, are constantly changing and being shaped by the elements it’s not possible to guarantee that entrance to the ice caves or that a glacier hike will be possible. If such unfortunate situations arise we will make every effort to make other stops, and your experience more enjoyable. As the Northern lights can be very elusive, their sighting cannot be guaranteed but if conditions offer a glimpse of hope we will go on a Northern lights hunt. There is no refund for the tour as the forces of nature are beyond our control. In Iceland all itineraries are designed to be flexible taking weather conditions into account.
