Ice Fjord Experience, Ilulissat

Today after the breakfast you will meet with your Captain, who will take you on a memorable journey across icy fjords.

The Icefjord is beautiful from land, but on the boat tour it is possible for you to get very close to the huge vibrant blue sculptures. These icebergs can be up to 100 meters high, and several hundred meters long and wide. Here you feel insignificantly small in the vast nature.

Icebergs are beautiful no matter of the weather. In bright sunlight, the ice shines chalky white and has the strongest contrasts. In cloudy weather, you will see way more nuances of color and structure in the ice. And in the midnight sun, a rosy glow is cast over the enormous colossi.

The ice can move quickly, and conditions can change from day to day – sometimes also from hour to hour. That is why each and every sailing tour amongst the icebergs is completely unique.

Today after the breakfast, at the hotel´s lobby you will meet with local Captain, who will take you on a memorable sail, through icy blue waters of Disko Bay. Region famously known for its iceberg but in summer is a home to magnificent whales.

Once in open waters, when the engine silences, it is your cue to adjust your eyes and ears to high alert. Seconds and minutes feel like eternity as you hold your breath waiting for a sign. But suddenly comes the unmistakable sound of a whale exhaling at the water’s surface, and you, too, exhale at the beauty. Maybe its mink whale or fin whale or with a bit of luck, you might even see a humpback whale, an acrobat among the great whales, despite its huge sizes. When it breaches, it can launch its whole body out of the water and strike the surface with its tail and fins.

Day at Glacier Lodge
experience

Day at leisure, Glacier Lodge Egi

Today you have whole day to spent at leisure.

You may wish to enjoy the arctic wilderness at your own peace or go for an outdoor adventure.

We recommend to have a one of a scenic hike. Long and incredibly varied hike that offers several types of landscape: lush lowlands, windswept highlands, moraines and, not least, the Inland Ice Sheet with crevasses, streams and glacier wells. We follow Paul-Émile Victor's tracks all the way to the ice cap. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, tracked vehicles with supplies for Paul-Émile Victor's famous Inland Ice expeditions ran here, and today we can see the remains of their machinery and an old cable car. In a beautiful valley with a view of a dead glacier, we enjoy our lunch before hiking over the moraine and into the Inland ice sheet. This is the absolute highlight of the trip. Well spent, we are home late in the day for a well-deserved dinner.

When we write in the degree of difficulty that the trip is demanding, it is not because it requires special training in walking on ice or climbing. The trip is not technically difficult - but it is a long trip of 25 km, and we climb approx. 1000 meters of altitude, so you have to be in good shape.

Day 6
Hike to moraine
experience

Private guided hike to the glacier moraine

Today after breakfast you will meet with the local guide at your cabin. The guide will take you on a breathtaking 5 hours hike, directly to glacier.

On the trip, you will pass old remains from the expeditions that have taken place in the area. Along the hike you may admire rushing streams and a beautiful lagoon. The polar silence is break only by the continuous rumble and crash of the glacier.

Once at the front of might glacier, you will have well deserved break, after the steep climb. While having a lunch in of the most scenic spot, keep an eye out for the small pieces of ice that fall from the ice wall.

The hike will end back at The Lodge, from here you will sail back to Ilulissat.
