Jökla River
Step into the enchanting world of Iceland’s first-class salmon rivers, celebrated for their unrivaled fishing experiences. The Jökla River stretches 100 km from Vatnajökull glacier to the North Atlantic, cutting through Iceland’s rugged and untamed wilderness.
A “fly-only” river, the Jökla is a paradise for fly fishing enthusiasts, offering a unique combination of variation of river, space per rod, and low fishing pressure—benefits that not only enhance the angler’s experience but also support vital salmon conservation. Known for its plentiful surface takes and classic fly fishing opportunities, the Jökla embodies the essence of Icelandic fishing: floating lines, light flies, and thrilling catches.
Beyond the main river, you’ll gain access to four spectacular tributaries, each with its own distinct character:
• Fossa and Laxa: Perfect for intimate, single-hand rod fishing.
• Kalda: Stunningly scenic, gin clear water, inviting pools.
• Fögruhlíðará: Flowing through serene meadows, offering exceptional fishing in its upper reaches.
In addition to Atlantic salmon, the river system offers excellent fishing for sea trout and Arctic char.
In keeping with Iceland’s conservation ethos, all salmon over 70 cm must be released.
A typical day on the Jökla River begins with breakfast at 7:00 AM, setting the stage for a full day of adventure. Once ready, your private guide will accompany you along the river according to the rotation schedule, ensuring smooth transport and positioning you on the best fishing spots throughout the day.
Fishing starts in the morning and continues until 1:00 PM, when a delicious lunch awaits. After a brief break, you’ll return to the river at 3:00 PM and fish until 8:00 or 9:00 PM. In simple, morning and afternoon shift.
Back at the lodge, unwind with a drink or relax in the sauna before indulging in a sumptuous three-course dinner. Evenings often bring guests together around the fireplace, exchanging stories of the day’s catches over a fine single malt before turning in for the night.
The Jökla River is divided into four beats, with two rods fishing on each beat. This rotation is set-up so you change beat each shirt which allows you to explore the entire river, from its varied pools to its stunning tributaries.
The Jökla River system is exclusively managed to accommodate just eight rods at a time, ensuring a premium experience. Comfortable and well-appointed lodging keeps you refreshed for each day’s fishing adventure. Your stay includes:
