Christmas is the most beloved holiday among the locals. From the decorations and lights to the food and the preservation of old traditions, everyone tries to make the festive season unique and authentic at the same time.
The City of Reykjavik decorates the downtown with lights, on the trees along the streets and with bells with lights over pedestrian streets. The Yule cat is the newest tradition, scaring and giving joy to all who pass by.
Downtown on Ingólfstorg square, where in the summer skateboarders practice their arts, is during December month an ice-skating ring, with an option of renting skates and any helping equipment you might need for great skating fun!
In the National Museum, you can learn about the Jule lads, the Icelandic versions of Santa Claus. These thirteen brothers come from the mountains, one by one from 12th December until Christmas. Each Yule lad has different mischief, and their name is according to that.
Their parents, Leppalúði and Mamma Grýla are feared by small children. There are many songs and rhymes about Yule lads and the family, try to learn at least one.
In the town of Hafnarfjörður, South of Reykjavik, there is traditionally a Christmas market, with local souvenirs and some typical Christmas foods. It might be small in scale but the atmosphere is very homey.
Many restaurants offer Christmas buffet (Jólahlaðboð), with a wide display of Christmas food, from the traditional ones to the ones with a more modern twist. It is the best way to get a glimpse into what a Christmas table might look like in Icelandic homes.

Today we explore the famous Golden Circle. This route encompasses many of Iceland’s most famous landmarks: Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the location of the world's first parliament; Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfalls. At Thingvellir National Park history and nature meets. This is the only place where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge comes to the surface and forms a rift valley between tectonic plates. Filled in the fissure created by the separation of the plates is glacial water that has been filtered underground for decades through hardened, porous lava rock. The filtering process of the glacial water makes Silfra one of the clearest bodies of water on earth with up to 120 meters of visibility.
The history was made at Thingvellir when in 930AD was formed Althing, the oldest parliament still in operation. Therefore Thingvellir is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage for both, natural and cultural importance.
At Geysir geothermal area Strokkur, "the butter churn”, erupts about every 4-8 minutes. The big Geyser, which gave name to all other geysers, has been in recent years inactive.
Gullfoss is an iconic waterfall located in South Iceland on the Hvítá River which is fed by Iceland´s second biggest glacier, Langjökull. On a sunny day, shimmering rainbow can be seen over the falls.
