Jökla River

Salmon Fishing

Welcome to the mesmerizing world of Iceland’s rivers and their iconic Atlantic salmon. Nestled within the heart of Iceland’s untamed wilderness, the Jökla River spans 100 km from the Vatnajokull glacier to the sea, just north of Egilsstaðir. Flowing through rugged landscapes, this pristine waterway is renowned as a "fly only" river, exclusively for fly fishing enthusiasts. It's best enjoyed with 13-foot double-hand rods and floating lines, offering plentiful surface takes.

The entire Jökla River is privately managed, catering to just 6-8 rods at a time. In addition, we fish four tributary rivers: Fossa and Laxa for intimate, single-hand rod fishing, Kalda for its longer pools amidst stunning scenery, and Fögruhlíðará, which flows serenely through meadows, offering exceptional salmon fishing in its upper reaches.

Join us for an unforgettable fishing adventure in the pristine Jökla River System.

The fishing lodge at Jökla overlooks the Kalda River, featuring a main mess building with a kitchen equipped with a wood-burning stove and satellite TV. A walkway leads to the sauna house and eight twin-bedroom cabins, each with a private bathroom. The main building includes a drying room with underfloor heating. Expect first-class cuisine and high comfort during your stay.

What to Expect:
Experience prime fishing conditions on the Jökla River, ensuring optimal chances of Atlantic salmon catches. An average of 20 salmon per day for the rods is typical during these peak times!
Note, all salmon over 70 cm must be released as a part of salmon conservation.

Did You Know?

The Jökla system lies just to the north of Egilsstaðir town and runs a 100 km course from the eastern slopes of the Vatnajokull glacier to the sea.

This glacier river’s waters once had the greatest density of silt of any river in the land, but now runs clear for most of the summer thanks to the hydroelectric dam that was built at the very top of the river in 2006.

Step into the enchanting world of Iceland’s first-class salmon rivers, celebrated for their unrivaled fishing experiences. The Jökla River stretches 100 km from Vatnajökull glacier to the North Atlantic, cutting through Iceland’s rugged and untamed wilderness.

A “fly-only” river, the Jökla is a paradise for fly fishing enthusiasts, offering a unique combination of variation of river, space per rod, and low fishing pressure—benefits that not only enhance the angler’s experience but also support vital salmon conservation. Known for its plentiful surface takes and classic fly fishing opportunities, the Jökla embodies the essence of Icelandic fishing: floating lines, light flies, and thrilling catches.

Beyond the main river, you’ll gain access to four spectacular tributaries, each with its own distinct character:
• Fossa and Laxa: Perfect for intimate, single-hand rod fishing.
• Kalda: Stunningly scenic, gin clear water, inviting pools.
• Fögruhlíðará: Flowing through serene meadows, offering exceptional fishing in its upper reaches.

In addition to Atlantic salmon, the river system offers excellent fishing for sea trout and Arctic char.

In keeping with Iceland’s conservation ethos, all salmon over 70 cm must be released.

Back at the lodge, unwind with a drink or relax in the sauna before indulging in a sumptuous three-course dinner. Evenings often bring guests together around the fireplace, exchanging stories of the day’s catches over a fine single malt before turning in for the night.
